About Wills Point
ABOUT In February 1922, the city council called a special election for paving and graveling of the streets, and in 1922 a bond was issued for $30,000. This bond would be passes and would help the people come up with their plans. Together the people helped make their streets better for everyone, which helped the community really come together. Secretary J.R. Finney of the chamber of commerce looked into the eligibility for free mail delivery services. More bonds were made so that brick streets could be laid down in the city. All the goals the people have set were completed and more buildings were built so that the stability of the city would greatly improve. The brick streets were one of the city’s biggest monument impacts as well as the bond for paving and graveling the streets.
Our Monument & Our People
ABOUT In 1916, as a gesture of appreciation for his early years in Wills Point, Ike donated the “Rose Monument” to the city—not as a memorial but as a gift to the place he remembered dearly. The “Rose Monument” is also referred as the “Rose Fountain” located at the intersection of North Commerce Street and North 4th Street in Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas. It’s a recorded Texas Historic Landmark and has served as a centeral civic feature of the town for over a century. PEOPLE Known as “Ike Rose,” was a german immigrant who settled in Wills Point in the early 1870’s. He and his brother “B.W Rose” or “Bernard William Rose” initially came to Cedar Grove area in 1873, and then the same year moved into what became Wills Point. Together, they operated Rose Dry Goods store, which served residents and travelers in the growing railroad town. In 1884, Ike moved to Dallas and became a successful entrepreneur. Bernard stayed in Wills Point after his brother moved to Dallas, he remained active in the local community and continued the presence of the Rose family – also with the Rose Dry Goods business. Local historic records show Bernard was associated with Wills Point long into the early 20th century and yet the community still remembers him.
The Brick Road is our Foundation
In the early 1920’s, the Wills Point leaders came together and decided to beautify the neighborhood. After many bonds, the citizens came together and decided to pave their streets with their own hands, which ended up saving them hundereds of dollars. The people really wanted brick streets and was able to have them in November of 1922. Officers were stationed at these brick streets and helped familiarize the people with traffic laws. The brick streets are one of the town’s historical significances along with the efforts of the people.
